    Voltage Stability Analysis of Grid-Connected Wind Farms with FACTS: Static and Dynamic Analysis

    Recently, analysis of some major blackouts and failures of power system shows that voltage instability problem has been one of the main reasons of these disturbances and networks collapse. In this paper, a systematic approach to voltage stability analysis using various techniques for the IEEE 14-bus case study, is presented. Static analysis is used to analyze the voltage stability of the system under study, whilst the dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the performance of compensators. The static techniques used are Power Flow, V–P curve analysis, and Q–V modal analysis. In this study, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission system (FACTS) devices- namely, Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Static Var Compensators (SVCs) - are used as reactive power compensators, taking into account maintaining the violated voltage magnitudes of the weak buses within the acceptable limits defined in ANSI C84.1. Simulation results validate that both the STATCOMs and the SVCs can be effectively used to enhance the static voltage stability and increasing network loadability margin. Additionally, based on the dynamic analysis results, it has been shown that STATCOMs have superior performance, in dynamic voltage stability enhancement, compared to SVCs

    A critical look at an Islamic Gold investment account

    This article assesses an Islamic gold investment account offered by an Islamic bank in Malaysia and analyses its pros and cons. We look into the product’s relative advantages and disadvantages compare to some other Islamic deposit products and conventional gold accounts. In process of the assessment we also come across some Shari’ah compliance related issues and some practices which needs to be scrutinized from Shari’ah, economic and social perspectives. Overall, our findings suggest the account to be worthwhile investment instrument for long-term saving instrument and promising venture at times of boom in gold prices. However, the account is considered as a risky and unfavorable investment when gold price is on fall or if the customer intends to keep his deposits for a brief period. Finally, we pose some questions to the reader to ponder upon about some possible implication of the product for the Islamic bank, its customer or the society at large

    Assessment of energy credits for the enhancement of the Egyptian Green Pyramid Rating System

    Energy is one of the most important categories in the Green Building Rating Systems all over the world. Green Building is a building that meets the energy requirements of the present with low energy consumption and investment costs without infringing on the rights of forthcoming generations to find their own needs. Despite having more than a qualified rating system, it is clear that each system has different priorities and needs on the other. Accordingly, this paper proposes a methodology using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for assessment of the energy credits through studying and comparing four of the common global rating systems, the British Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the American Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the Australian Green Stars (GS), and the PEARL assessment system of the United Arab Emirates, in order to contribute to the enhancement of the Egyptian Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS). The results show the mandatory and optional energy credits that should be considered with their proposed weights according to the present and future needs of green Egypt. The results are compared to data gathered through desk studies and results extracted from recent questionnaires

    Modelling of rigid walled enclosure couple to a flexible wall using matlab and ansys APDL

    Generally, solutions to improve the noise problems in enclosure are to redesign or modifying the system such as increasing the thickness of the wall panels, enhancing the elasticity of the structure, and increase the damping mechanism of the wall structure. In this paper, the application of vibroacoustic modelling of enclosure coupled to a flexible wall was presented. The sound pressure characteristics of rigid walled enclosure, such as natural frequency and mode shape were determined using two approaches which are finite element simulation of Ansys® and mathematical model. The mathematical equations derived in Matlab® such as rigid walled enclosure and rigid walled enclosure coupled to flexible wall were used to validate finite element analysis (FEA). The result indicates that the theory and FEA display in a good agreement. Thus, proved that the FE model was accurate and can be applied in further research such as sound pressure and noise attenuation in enclosure

    Altered Thymic Function during Interferon Therapy in HCV-Infected Patients

    Interferon alpha (IFNα) therapy, despite good efficacy in curing HCV infection, leads to major side effects, in particular inducement of a strong peripheral T-cell lymphocytopenia. We here analyze the early consequences of IFNα therapy on both thymic function and peripheral T-cell homeostasis in patients in the acute or chronic phase of HCV-infection as well as in HIV/HCV co-infected patients. The evolution of T-cell subsets and T-cell homeostasis were estimated by flow cytometry while thymic function was measured through quantification of T-cell receptor excision circles (TREC) and estimation of intrathymic precursor T-cell proliferation during the first four months following the initiation of IFNα therapy. Beginning with the first month of therapy, a profound lymphocytopenia was observed for all T-cell subsets, including naïve T-cells and recent thymic emigrants (RTE), associated with inhibition of intrathymic precursor T-cell proliferation. Interleukin (IL)-7 plasma concentration rapidly dropped while lymphocytopenia progressed. This was neither a consequence of higher consumption of the cytokine nor due to its neutralization by soluble CD127. Decrease in IL-7 plasma concentration under IFNα therapy correlated with the decline in HCV viral load, thymic activity and RTE concentration in blood. These data demonstrate that IFNα-based therapy rapidly impacts on thymopoiesis and, consequently, perturbs T-cell homeostasis. Such a side effect might be detrimental for the continuation of IFNα therapy and may lead to an increased level of infectious risk, in particular in HIV/HCV co-infected patients. Altogether, this study suggests the therapeutic potential of IL-7 in the maintenance of peripheral T-cell homeostasis in IFNα-treated patients

    Theoretical Modelling of a Beam with Attached Spring-Mass-Damper System

    Vibrations are always undesirable, wasting energy besides producing noise. In this case, beams which are prominent component in most engineering having no exemption from the vibration effect when imposed by dynamic loading. One of the approach to attenuate vibration of a structure is by having a spring-mass-damper (SMD) system or typically known as vibration neutralizer attached to the vibrating structure. This method is more promising as it does not contribute significant additional energy to the structure. The work presented in this paper describes the frequency response (FRF) of a simply supported beam with an attached SMD system. A mathematical model of a beam was at first developed in the study which was further derived to include the attachment of SMD system. In order to transform the derived equations into a form of graph that can be analysed, Matlab® software was used. The outcome from Matlab® shows that the attachment of SMD onto beam attenuates its vibration significantly. The result also displays a good resemblance FRF when compared with numerical finite element analysis of Ansys®. It is expected that the theoretical derivation demonstrated in this paper provide a helpful reference to future researchers who endeavour to find equations of a simply supported beam with an attached SMD system as well as for a vibration control study

    Theoretical modelling of sound radiation from plate

    Recently the development of aerospace, automotive and building industries demands the use of lightweight materials such as thin plates. However, the plates can possibly add to significant vibration and sound radiation, which eventually lead to increased noise in the community. So, in this study, the fundamental concept of sound pressure radiated from a simply-supported thin plate (SSP) was analyzed using the derivation of mathematical equations and numerical simulation of ANSYS®. The solution to mathematical equations of sound radiated from a SSP was visualized using MATLAB®. The responses of sound pressure level were measured at far field as well as near field in the frequency range of 0–200 Hz. Result shows that there are four resonance frequencies; 12 Hz, 60 Hz, 106 Hz and 158 Hz were identified which represented by the total number of the peaks in the frequency response function graph. The outcome also indicates that the mathematical derivation correlated well with the simulation model of ANSYS® in which the error found is less than 10%. It can be concluded that the obtained model is reliable and can be applied for further analysis such as to reduce noise emitted from a vibrating thin plate

    Study of a simply-supported beam with attached multiple vibration absorbers by using finite element analysis

    Vibrations are well known as the source of problem in the damage and loss of control of equipment which can reduce the efficiency of a machine. Few methods can be done to control the vibration and one of it is by adding absorbers. In this study, the concept of attached multiple vibration absorbers to a simply-supported beam was applied to reduce the structural vibration amplitude. The method employed in this research was finite element simulation of ANSYS® APDL. The frequency range of the study was set between 5 to 1000 Hz in which capture up to four modes shapes of the beam. Further study was conducted by positioning the absorber at three different locations which resulted the vibration reduction of 33% when positioning at middle of the beam. The experiment was continued in depth by adding multiple vibration absorbers from two to ten absorbers. The overall vibration reduction achieved for multiple absorbers was 89% (with attached four and eight absorbers) compared to a single absorber which only achieved 33% reduction. t can be concluded that adding multiple absorbers produce better vibration reduction compared to single absorber. However, adding more vibration absorbers need to be considered thoroughly since excessive weight will result in less fuel efficiency towards vehicles, aerospace, automotive and machine systems
